Pollution, Pollutant, Contamination, and Contaminant - TNPSC - Environmental Scientist Notes

Definitions and examples for Pollution, Pollutant, Contamination, and Contaminant

1. Pollution

Definition:
Pollution is the undesirable introduction of harmful substances or energy into the environment (air, water, or soil) that causes adverse effects on living organisms and ecosystems.

Example:
Smoke released from factories into the atmosphere is air pollution, which can harm human health and the ozone layer.

2. Pollutant

Definition:
A pollutant is any substance or form of energy that causes pollution. It is typically harmful or toxic and can be natural or human-made.

Example:
Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emitted from coal-burning power plants is a pollutant that contributes to acid rain.

3. Contamination

Definition:
Contamination is the presence of an unwanted substance in a material, environment, or system. It may or may not be harmful, depending on the context and concentration.

Example:
When pesticides enter a river due to agricultural runoff, it leads to water contamination.

4. Contaminant

Definition:
A contaminant is any physical, chemical, biological, or radiological substance that should not be present in a system, material, or environment. It becomes harmful depending on its quantity and nature.

Example:
Lead in drinking water is a contaminant, which is dangerous to health even in small amounts.
